Progressing in my career

In this rapidly changing world of work it is vital to engage in ongoing professional development after you have completed your degree.

What is professional development?

  • The ongoing acquisition of knowledge or skills throughout life.
  • It can happen formally or informally, via education, training, work and general life experiences.

Why should I do it?

  • To upgrade and stay current with the professional skills and knowledge required to operate successfully in your career.
  • To ensure you remain employable! "New labour market entrants are likely to experience a succession of work roles, with 12-25 jobs in up to five industry sectors in their working lives." (www.lifework.ca/lifework/papers.htm)
  • In a knowledge-based economy where change is driven by rapid developments in Information and Communication Technologies, ongoing or lifelong learning is essential to any career management plan.

How can I do it?

  • Join the Professional Association attached to your industry. Many hold professional development events and conferences where latest trends and best practice is shared. Some also produce publications to help keep members' knowledge current.
  • Engage a mentor.
  • Attend short courses or complete post-graduate studies in line with your career goals.
