What is an internship?

Internships are a temporary position in the company and emphasise on-the-job training. They provide opportunities for students to gain first hand experience in their field of study, determine if they have an interest in a particular industry or career, network and make industry contacts. Internships provide the employers with the prospect of interns returning to the company following graduation.

An internship can be part-time or full time. Usually they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer and winter vacations. Internships run for about 6-12 weeks, but can vary depending on the company.

How can I promote my company internship and vacation work opportunities to University of Sydney students through the Careers Centre?

Step 1:Use our online job advertising service. This service is free of charge and is the most effective way of promoting work opportunities to our students. When you place an ad online it also sent out to potentially over 10,000 students who have subscribed to Job Alert giving your company more exposure and promotion on campus. Visit Your Careers Centre

Step 2:Visit campus and give a presentation to students in a seminar or lecture style. Talk about your company and opportunities you have to offer and increase your company profile on campus. Click on Employer Presentations to find out more information and how to book.

Step 3:Try our University postering service. It’s great for short term marketing to reach students across campus. You could use this service before coming on campus to promote your company presentation or can simply use this service to further promote your company throughout the University. For pricing and to book please visit Postering

Step 4:Hard Copy mailout to targeted students. Send your brochures, invitations or letters to specific student cohorts for a more targeted approach. This can be linked to campus interviews or presentations, or be used as a stand-alone process. The hard copy targeted mailout is great if your internship program is targets students completing studies in a specific discipline. Click on Mailout for more information about this service.

Step 5:Attend our Internship & Vacation Work Fair held annually on campus. This fair is a valuable opportunity to raise your profile on campus and promote your undergraduate opportunities directly to University of Sydney students. This fair is getting more popular each year with a record number of attendance and participants. Lock in the date for next years fair which will be held on Wednesday 29th July 2009.

This year the fair was held on the 30th of July, 2008 and proved to be a great success, attracting over 1400 students from all disciplines. With thirty-eight attending employers, recruiting from a range of degree programs, the Fair provided an ideal forum for students to speak about Internship and Vacation Work opportunities and future career paths with employers.

Our Careers Fairs section will have more information about the 2009 dates and registration openings shortly.
