POSTGRADUATE STUDY SHOULDN’T JUST BE IN THE
CLASSROOM

Although taking on a postgraduate degree can be intellectually satisfying, there is always the thought of job prospects and how to balance study with practical experience to land the job you want. Postgraduate studies need to be seen as more than just a thesis, but an experience that extends beyond the classroom to incorporate those generic skills that appeal to all employers including verbal communication skills, independence as well as creativity. Connecting postgraduate study with the non-academic world can be daunting and is not restricted to industry partnerships.

Postgraduates need to branch out and think about the ways that their work can engage a broader audience whether it be through practical application or taking part in contemporary public debates. In short, you need to think about your career within the broader context. This does not mean tailoring your study to suit a future employer, but thinking of it as a two-way process where academic work can also play a role in shaping the needs of employers.

SUPRA (Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association) aims to encourage postgrads to take this broader view and to assist in breaking down the barriers between the academic world and broader society. Apart from the many other services it offers with assisting student’s progress through their studies, they also hold an annual conference called Connect. Start thinking about and building your career prospects by participating in the Connect07 conference. It is fun and will give you the chance to meet other postgraduates and make useful contacts. The Careers Centre will be running a careers workshop as part of the SUPRA conference.
