Targeting - Final year students across all disciplines
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - Graduate employers join with Careers Centre staff to give you the 'must have' inside word on the graduate recruitment process, including what graduate employers look for when hiring graduates.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- be aware of the key graduate recruitment dates and associated events,
- know how to effectively connect with employers at Careers Fairs,
- understand how to stand out from the crowd in your job applications, and
- learn how to best represent yourself at interview.
Assessment Centres
Targeting - Final and penultimate year students (undergrad and postgrad) across all disciplines
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - Graduate employers and Careers Centre staff uncover the secrets of assessment centres; what they are, why they exist, and how you can perform at your best in them. Common types of assessment activities, such as psychometric, analytical, personality and team-based assessments are addressed.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- know how to prepare for an assessment centre interview,
- understand the key skills and characteristics assessors look for in candidates, and
- view samples of a range of assessment centre activities including; psychometric, analytical, personality and team-based assessments
Careers Exploration Workshop
Targeting - Final year students across all disciplines
Duration - 2 hours
Overview - Qualified Careers Centre staff teach you the 'how to' of effective career planning. An essential for anyone serious about gaining clarity about their future career direction and developing lifelong career planning skills.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- be clear about the skills you posses and wish to utilise in your future career,
- understand the key influences on your career decision-making,
- learn career goal setting skills, and
- be able to access a copy of our Career Exploration Workbook that contains vital factors to consider when planning your career.

Employability Skills - 1st and 2nd Year Students
Targeting - First and second year students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - This series assists students to take control of their career development from the very beginning of their studies through to graduation.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- be clear on the skills you possess and be able to clearly articulate them,
- identify any skills gaps that may exist in relation to your career goal/s, and
- develop a strategic plan to address ongoing skills development.
Employability Skills - Penultimate Year Students
Targeting - First year students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - This series assists students to take control of their career development throughout their studies and through to graduation.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- be presented with tips to increase your employability skills whilst at university,
- learn how to develop a portfolio of evidence of the skills you have developed, and
- understand the importance of evidencing employability skills when applying for graduate positions.
Employability Skills - Final Year Students
Targeting - Penultimate year students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - This series assists students to take control of their career development particularly in their final year as they focus on applying for graduate positions, entering the workforce or engaging effectively in other post-study activities. The focus of the workshop for final year and postgraduate students is to assist them to market their skills to employers and develop their relation-building networks. The workshops will guide students to develop confidence in describing their relevant skills to potential employers.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- learn how to effectively market your employable skills to employers in job applications,
- understand the importance of developing relationships and networks in your target career field, and
- improve your ability to confidently describe your employable skills in a face-to-face situation.
Faculty-Based Workshops: Career Essentials
Targeting - Penultimate and final year students across all faculties
Duration - Series of 3 x 1-hour workshops
Overview - Careers Centre staff collaborate with faculties, employers and professional associations to ensure you are equipped with the essentials of career management. Workshop Schedule for 2009:
Semester 1 - Engineering and IT, Science and Education.
Semester 2 - Engineering and IT, Science, Arts, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy and Health Science.
*Workshops with other faculties may be arranged throughout the year.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this series of workshops you will:
- understand where you can find degree-related work experience,
- understand where you can find degree-related graduate jobs,
- learn how to write a resume that will stand out from the crowd, and
- acquire essential interview skills and techniques.
International Students' Series – Strategies for Finding Work in Australia
Targeting - International students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - A must-attend workshop for any international student seeking work in Australia. Maximum benefit will be gained if you attend all 3 workshops in this series.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- gain access to a list of websites that advertise overseas graduate job vacancies,
- have a clear understanding of the full range of strategies for finding work in Australia that extend beyond just visiting job search websites,
- learn how to present yourself, and your skills, experience and knowledge in the best possible way on your resume,
- understand the importance of solid written and verbal communication skills in the job search process, and
- learn of the services available to assist in strengthening professional written and verbal communication skills.
International Students' Series – Marketing Your Skills
Targeting - International students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - Rebecca Wells, a Cross-Cultural Consultant from Clear Horizons Coaching, addresses the important matter of promoting yourself to Australian employers. Maximum benefit will be gained if you attend all 3 workshops in this series.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- understand what Australian employers look for in job candidates,
- prepare for some of the most commonly asked interview questions,
- learn how to effectively market yourself to and communicate with Australian employers,
- receive valuable tips on how to start out successfully in the Australian workplace.
International Students' Series – Managing Yourself in the Australian Workplace
Targeting - International students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - Rebecca Wells, a Cross-Cultural Consultant from Clear Horizons Coaching will present this workshop. Maximum benefit will be gained if you attend all 3 workshops in this series.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- gain a clear understanding of the cultural differences between workplaces and relationships with colleagues from your home nation and the Australian workplace,
- acquire tips regarding relationship building techniques, and
- learn how to manage cross-cultural differences and expectations during the job search process.
Interview Preparation: 10 Hot Tips
Targeting - Penultimate and final year students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - A graduate employer joins with Careers Centre staff to share their ten hot tips for interview preparation.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- receive tips on how to structure a great response to behavioural interview questions using the STAR model,
- gain a clear understanding of the different types of interviews including panel, telephone and assessment centre,
- learn about recommended actions to take at the end of your interview, and
- understand how to improve your interview performance.
Interview Practice
Targeting - Penultimate and final year students across all faculties
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - A practical session aimed at giving you practice in answering behavioural questions and receiving feedback on your answers and your body language. N.B. You must have attended an interview preparation session prior to attending this workshop as we will assume that you know the basics about interviews.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- improve your responses to commonly asked behavioural interview questions,
- receive feedback about your interview performance and tips for improvement, and
- understand the importance of non-verbal communication at interview and learn how your body language can create a positive impression.
Resume Rescue
Targeting - All students
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - Qualified Careers Centre staff will check your resume in a group setting and give you practical tips on how to improve it. You need to bring a copy of your resume and any other relevant job application documents to this workshop.
Important Notes - Before attending this workshop you need to have:
- attended a Resume Writing workshop and read the associated handouts,
- completed Module 4 of Resume Express (a free resume writing tutorial available online), and
- drafted a copy of your resume and/or other relevant job application documents.

Targeting - All students
Duration - 1 hour
Overview - In this competitive job market it is essential your resume is not just good, but great. Hear direct from a graduate employer and qualified Careers Centre staff the inside tips on how to make your resume stand out from the crowd.
Outcomes - As a result of attending this seminar you will:
- find out an employer’s preference about length of your document,
- the best order of headings,
- how to focus your content to match the job requirements, and
- how to avoid common mistakes.
