Lack of Employability Skills
In today’s skill short market, Australian industry needs graduates who are not only well educated but who are also fully employable – who have the practical, work-ready skills that are highly regarded by employers. It is these employability skills, such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork, that enable employees to work effectively in their roles.
Some employers believe that graduates entering the workforce possess strong discipline-specific knowledge but lack the employability skills to intelligently apply that knowledge in the work setting.
SydneyTalent Intern
SydneyTalent takes a proactive approach to equipping future graduates of the University of Sydney for immediate useful employment and SydneyTalent Intern has been specifically designed to increase each student’s readiness for the workplace.
Participating students are afforded the flexibility to manage their study commitments while undertaking meaningful, course-related, paid employment and all SydneyTalent Interns attend customised skills development courses designed to augment the practical workplace skills learned on-the-job. To complement the mentoring received in the workplace, the SydneyTalent Intern performance measurement framework ensures each student’s key development goals are attained and recorded as they progress through the program on their way to graduation.
Three values form the cornerstones on which SydneyTalent Intern is built:
- Valuable work
Students undertake meaningful work whilst gaining exposure to challenging, real-world business situations where they are given the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained at University. Employers capitalise on each student’s individual talent and gain a valuable resource for their company. - Flexibility
Study commitments are accommodated with students able to work full-time during semester break and/or part-time during semester. The SydneyTalent tailored solution enables employers to define their individual needs, be it for project-based and/or ongoing operational roles and allows SydneyTalent Interns to manage their work and study commitments through a variety of employment needs. - Fair remuneration
Students receive the market rate for work undertaken through SydneyTalent Intern.
Partners in success – optimising advantage for student and industry
Through SydneyTalent Intern, the aim of SydneyTalent is to engage with employer and student to build a partnership that is mutually beneficial to all parties.
The employer provides the student with an environment in which to improve their employability skills whilst engaging them in meaningful, course-related work. Participating organisations agree to provide flexible working conditions to accommodate study commitments and pay the market rate for the services they receive. It gives the student the chance to prove themselves to a potential employer, the opportunity to validate their career choices before embarking on their career path and ultimately, increases their employment prospects upon graduation.
The student brings the latest, advanced, technical knowledge learned in class to the business and is keen to apply that knowledge for the betterment of the business.
